On May 11, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that construction is scheduled to begin Friday, May 18, on a project to rehabilitate the structurally-deficient bridge carrying Old Lancaster Road over Amtrak in Tredyffrin Township.
Due to the nature of the repairs, Old Lancaster Road will be closed and detoured between U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue) and Howellville Road through the completion of the project scheduled for late August. The sidewalk on the bridge will remain open to pedestrians.
During this three-month bridge closure, passenger vehicles will be directed to use U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue), Old Lancaster Road, Conestoga Road and Howellville Road. Trucks will be directed to use U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue), Route 252 (Bear Hill Road), Cassatt Road and Howellville Road.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area because slowdowns will occur. Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.
As part of this bridge improvement project, PennDOT’s contractor will remove and replace the deteriorated reinforced concrete deck and curbs and 12 steel floor beams; replace the deteriorated concrete barrier wall at the southeast corner of U.S. 30 and Old Lancaster Road; attach new guiderail to the new barrier at the southeast approach to the bridge; and repoint the stone masonry abutments and wingwalls where needed.
Built in 1957, the single-span riveted steel beam bridge is 67 feet long and 20 feet wide. The structure carries about 5,600 vehicles a day. The bridge is currently posted for 14 tons, and 20 tons for combination vehicles.
The Old Lancaster Road bridge is one of nine structures in Chester and Montgomery counties that PennDOT is repairing under a $7,296,296 project financed by Act 89, the state’s transportation plan.
Structures completed under this project include:
· Ross Fording Road over Octoraro Creek in West Fallowfield Township, Chester County;
· Quakertown Road over Macoby Creek in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County; and
· Route 63 (Welsh Road) over Norfolk Southern Railroad in Upper Dublin and Upper Moreland townships, Montgomery County.
The other bridges in this rehabilitation project include:
· Boot Road over Route 100 in West Whiteland Township, Chester County;
· Whitford Road over Valley Creek in West Whiteland Township, Chester County;
· Route 611 over Pennypack Creek in Upper Moreland, Montgomery County;
· Route 611 over the Pennsylvania Turnpike ramp in Upper Moreland, Montgomery County; and
· Linfield Road over Norfolk Southern Railroad in Limerick Township, Montgomery County.
Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in August 2020.
Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor on this bridge improvement project that is financed with 100 percent state funds.
