Speaker Series at Historic Waynesborough

Tuesday, May 30, 2023

Author and Historian Dr. Ricardo A. Herrera to discuss recent book on the Continental Army's encampment at Valley Forge.

What was life like for the Continental soldiers camped at Valley Forge during the dark, cold days of the American Revolution?  How did they cope with weather, disease and lack of provisions?  And what role did local hero General Anthony Wayne play during this challenging time?

Join us at Historic Waynesborough, where speaker Dr. Ricardo Herrera will draw on his 2022 book Feeding Washington's Army: Surviving the Valley Forge Winter of 1778, and bring to light lesser-known stories about the army's activities at the encampment, and the army's herculean efforts to feed itself, support local and Continental governments, and challenge the British army.

Highlighting the missteps and triumphs of both General Washington, and his officers, as well as ordinary soldiers, sailors, and militiamen, Dr. Herrera will reveal how close the Continental Army came to succumbing to starvation and how strong and resourceful its soldiers and leaders needed to be to survive.

Feeding Washington's Army will be available for sale at the event, and Dr. Herrera will be available for book signing.
